Make mine rare

27 Feb

I mentioned in a recent column that the Glengarry Pioneer Museum is slowing awaking from its winter slumber. And one of the first stirrings is their annual Steak Night Fundraiser at the Windsor Tavern in Vankleek Hill. The fourth occurrence of this popular event will take place on Friday, March 8thand, if you’ve never attended before, be advised that you must make reservations. And I urge you to make them early.

The dinner includes a crispy salad with a choice of dressing and a flavourful steak grilled to your degree of doneness… along with sides of fried mushrooms, a baked potato (or French fries) and a hunk of toasted garlic bread. Makes my mouth water just writing about it.

The dinner costs $15 per person, plus beverages and tax. And a portion of these proceeds will go towards the Glengarry Pioneer Museum’ s annual War of 1812 weekend in the fall. There are two sittings: one at 5:30 and the second at 7:30. To make a reservation, call the Windsor Tavern at 613-678-2122.

Unless the roads are truly impassable, please venture out and support the museum’s War of 1812 volunteers. The more steak dinners the Windsor Tavern sells on March 8th, the more the group will make. As in the past, there will also be loads of door prizes and a 50/50 jackpot to be won. Historical dress is encouraged, but not mandatory.

Downish, but not out

I sincerely apologize to the Canada Post contractor who plows the DRA parking lot in front of Dunvegan’s community mailboxes. His or her ears must have been burning this past Saturday as I uttered a string of expletives while trying to stabilize the little red lending library down at the hall. Last week, I learned that the cedar post that supports the book repository had been split along its length and was in danger of toppling over. But it turns out that it wasn’t a snowplow that struck the post. The carpenter working on the accessibility renovations at the hall witnessed the truck delivering fuel oil lose its grip on the icy driveway and slide into the post.

Robert Campbell and I were able to temporarily tie the post together with threaded rods. However, the cedar log will have to be replaced in the spring. In the meantime the “take a book, leave a book” lending library continues to be open for business.

Hockey trumps reading

While we’re on the topic of libraries, if the North Glengarry by-law officer is looking to make a bit of spare change for the Township, he should add the parking lot at the SD&G public library at the Glengarry Sports Palace to his patrol route. It is often a gold mine of potential parking fines and impoundment revenue. Terry and I stopped by on Saturday and the parking slots reserved for library patrons were jammed full, including the handicap spaces. Yet the library, having just opened its doors, was devoid of customers. My assumption is that the owners of the huge, shiny pick-up trucks parked in front of the library had commandeered the convenient spots in order to save time. This meant that the intended users of this short row of reserved parking — often much older and far less spry than the youngsters playing hockey — were relegatedto parking spots far across the ice-covered lot.

Euchre NO / Movie MAYBE

I peeked into the DRA hall last Saturday to check on how the renovations to the handicapped washroom were coming along. And I’m pleased to report that some progress has been made. However, the end is not yet in sight. As a result, our DRA Euchre Luncheons will not resume until April. There is still a possibility, though, that we may be throwing a Saturday Night at the Movie event in March. I’ll keep you posted.
